The purpose of the this study was to evaluate the effect of sealant application and
loss in caries prevention.
Total 60 sound human teeth were selected and divided into 5 groups.
After shallow cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surface of each tooth,
sealants were applied in accordance with following five methods.
¥°. Control group : No sealant application.
¥±. Experimental group:
Group 1. : Cavities with resin sealant application
Group 2. : Cavities with resin sealant application and loss after 7 days.
Group 3. : Cavities with glass Ionomer sealant application
Group 4. : Cavities with glass Ionomer sealant application and loss after 7 days.
Specimens for artificial caries formation were exposed to the artificial caries system
(Sodium Tripolyphosphate system to pH 45 with 0.1M lactic acid) for 5 days, and
longitudinal undecalcified ground section were prepared through enamel windows, and
observed with room stereomicroscope and polarizing microscope.
The following results were obtained :
1. Pit and fissure sealants were produced inhibition effect on induced caries-like
lesion.
2. Average lesions depth was 129.1¥ìm in the control group, 20.4¥ìm in the group 2,
46.6 ¥ìm in the group 4.
3. Induced caries-like lesion inhibition effect was the most in the group 3 and group
1, and then was the group 2, group 4 respectively. Their effect was significant
difference, among each group (p<0.05).
